The Institute of Marine Sciences is hosting this week the meeting of COMEDA experts working group, which is the first meeting of this new ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) working group. The meeting is attended by 20 participants from various European scientific institutions, including Spain, France, Greece, England, Denmark and Germany.
Scientists at the Institut de Ciències del Mar participate in the European project Mariabox (“MARINE environmental in situ Assessment and monitoring tool BOX”). The project, funded by the European Seventh Framework Program (FP7), aims to develop automatic sensors for analyzing pollutants and algae toxins in the sea. The devices will be instal·led on buoys in several points along the European coast.
Next November 2014, the Institute of Marine Science will host the 2nd edition of the Ecopath conference, titled "Modeling ecosystem dynamics: beyond boundaries with EwE ", celebrating the 30th birthday of the Ecopath approach to model aquatic ecosystems.
The General Secretariat of Fisheries and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment awarded to Francesc Piferrer, Research Professor at the Department of Renewable Marine Resources of the Institute of Marine Sciences, the XII Jacumar Aquaculture Research Award for the work entitled "Epigenetics of fish sex determination: How the temperature during the larval stages determines the sex ratio in the European sea bass and its application in aquaculture for the production of a greater number of females."
The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) and the Marine Technology Unit (UTM) present today “Antarctica , life on the edge. Scientifics travels today” at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona (MMB). This is an exhibition that explains the scientific expedition adventure in this continent aboard to a research vessel. The scientific responsible of the exhibition is Josep Maria Gili, researcher at ICM’s Department of Marine Biology and Oceanography.
Researchers from the Marine Sciences Institute have detected and described a new species of microalgae, Polykrikos tanit, from marine waters of the Catalan coast. The authors of the study, published in the Protist journal, are Albert Reñé, Jordi Camp and Esther Garcés, from the Marine Biology and Oceanography Department.
