Barcelona Ocean is an educational initiative granting highly specialized courses on all fields related to the Marine Sciences as well as generalist courses on many themes related to the formation of researchers and science dissemination. The Barcelona Ocean courses will be held at the Institute of Marine Sciences (Institut de Ciències del Mar, ICM).
Since the '80, the ICM holds the Biological Reference Collections (CBR), which contain a natural history heritage of over 1.800 marine species and more of 26.000 catalogued specimens of Fishes, Crustaceans and Cephalopods, came from all over the world, but mainly, from the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
The BIO Hesperides research vessel sets sail today bound for Antarctica with thirty researchers of PEGASO (Plankton-derived Emission of trace Gases and Aerosols in the Southern Ocean, Spanish State grant), BIO-NUC (BIOgenic Marine Aerosol: from NUcleations to Clouds, Spanish State grant) and MANU (Marine Aerosol NUcleations, EU Marie Curie project) projects.
From 22 to 26 September a course on ‘Qualitative Mathematical Modelling of Complex Systems’ was held at ICM headquarters, by Professor Jeffrey Dambacher from CSIRO (Australia). A group of 20 scientists and student from Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, USA and Australia attended the workshop.
Biological invasions have become major players in the current biodiversity crisis, but realistic tools to predict which species will establish successful populations are still unavailable.
An international team of scientists from Italy, Spain and the United States, with the participation of the Institute of Marine de Barcelona (CSIC) e Pompeu Fabra University, developed a method to predict how quickly and easily can develop invasive alien species populations .
From 16 to 19 September, the ICM will host in Barcelona an ICREA workshop on climate during the Pliocene and implications for the future, jointly organized by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the ICM.
