The ICM researcher was elected by the entity members during the last general assembly, which was held this November.

The researcher at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) Montse Sala is the new vice-president of the Societat Catalana de Biologia (SCB), a subsidiary of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC). The aim of this entity is to foster the dissemination, both among the scientific community and the general public, of the research related to life sciences carried out in Catalonia.
The members of the SCB voted Sala as vice-president during the last general assembly, which was held this November. Thus, the ICM researcher leaves the position of Vocal of Publications and Lexicography that she has occupied for the last five years in this same entity to assume the vice-presidency, which she shares with the UB researcher Montserrat Corominas.
"The new Directive Board has great potential, both for its knowledge of the society and for its dynamism, which will surely help us to bring together professionals and scientists to improve the dissemination of activities related to life sciences that are carried out by universities, research centres and other entities in Catalonia," states Montse Sala.
Centenary trajectory
Founded in 1912, the SCB is the largest and most active scientific society in Catalonia. It was one of the the first societies within the IEC and its first president was Dr. August Pi i Sunyer. Nowadays, the SCB has more than 1600 members, 80% of whom are active in research at universities or research centres in Catalonia.
Throughout the year, the SCB organises activities around its 19 thematic sections on the most current aspects of basic and applied biology. These sections include ecology, aquaculture, biophysics and microbiology. The society also has 9 territorial sections, being the ones of Balearic Islands, Andorra, Southern Catalonia and Girona the latest to join the SCB.
