An international study published in the journal Science, with the participation of the ICM-CSIC, shows how the geological isolation of the Mediterranean Sea during the Miocene led to an accumulation of salt that caused an ecological crisis.

Details are outlined in a study by the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) recently published in the journal Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries.

Coordinated by ICM-CSIC, the initiative will develop an innovative technology to generate clean energy for underwater monitoring and marine restoration infrastructures.

The work, in which the ICM-CSIC has participated, warns that Arctic demersal fish face local extinction by the end of the century without climate refugia at eastern latitudes.

These are species that had been previously described, but their ability to degrade plastic-derived products leached into the ocean was unknown.

The authors of the study, in which the ICM-CSIC has participated, call for immediate global action to ensure food security.
