The second edition of the “Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia” has finished on Friday 18th of July at the Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) with a closing event open to general public where the students of the Colloquia have presented the conclusions of the Colloquia.
This edition is included in the events of the commemoration of the tenth death of Ramon Margalef (Barcelona, 1919-2004). He was one of the founders of modern ecology and very often applied his ideas to the marine environment. He broke old paradigms and contributed to science with innovating theories about the space-time structure of the ecosystems, the relations between diversity, biodiversity, stability and connectivity, the fundamental paper of energy in the biological productivity and the interrelations between ecological succession and evolution.
The current edition «What ecology can learn from natural and human-induced disturbances. A cross-system view», has been closed after two weeks of intensive work. Finally, 25 students of diverse nationalities and 24 internationally recognized lecturers have been actively participated.
The leitmotiv of the Colloquia was to create discussions and dialogue between seniors professors experts in terrestrial, marine and fresh water ecology and the students about the functioning of the naturals systems under some naturals and human-induced disturbances in a future context of global change. The talks and the discussions were completed with some classes of ecosystem modelling.
The Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) wants to thanks for the collaboration to the Association of Catalan Oceanographers, the University of Barcelona, the University Pompeu Fabra, the Autonomus University of Barcelona and Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications, and the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology, and the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research for the financial support.
This second edition has been positively evaluated by the students and lecturers. Next edition, will address marine topics, and will be announced during the following months.
