The specialized journal Scientia Marina, published quarterly since 1998 by the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) of Barcelona, has made a qualitative leap by increasing its impact factor from 1,172 to 1,576 and by renewing the Quality Seal awarded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) in recognition of the editorial and scientific quality of publications.

In addition, the FECYT has awarded the journal the "Mention of Good Editorial Practices in Gender Equality", which is calculated taking into account both the number of female and male editors on the editorial committee –in recent years an effort has been made to balance gender-, and the number of authors signing the articles, reviews and comments published.

"This qualitative leap has been possible thanks to the work of the editors of the journal, as well as the efforts of the technical and research staff of the ICM, who from the beginning have worked tirelessly to make Scientia Marina become a marine journal of reference worldwide", celebrate Francesc Peters, editor-in-chief of Scientia Marina, Dolors Vaqué, outgoing editor-in-chief and current secretary of the journal, and María Victoria Martínez de Albéniz, technical secretary of the publication.

Scientia Marina is the successor of Investigación Pesquera (1955) and, since 1998, it has been included in the Science Citation Index, a bibliographic database where all the contributions (articles, editorials, letters, reviews, discussions, etc.) that can be published in the main science and technology journals indexed by the companies Clarivate Analytics and Scopus are collected.

The journal publishes marine studies from all over the world and emphasises environmental contents of general interest and with an inductive approach. It publishes a variable number of contributions each year, including research articles, review articles, commentaries, discussions and monographs on topics related to marine research.

Scientia Marina offers a streamlined process for processing manuscripts, which are published online within 3-6 months of acceptance. It provides open access to published articles through its website and is also distributed to many marine research institutions around the world.

"The commitment of all ICM staff over the years has resulted in the publication of quality articles in the journal, which has increased its visibility and competence to publish. Moreover, this year's achievements, which we hope will improve next year, point to a very promising future for Scientia Marina", conclude the journal's editors.
