From 8th to 13th of July takes place the sixth edition of the "Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia", organized by the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) and the Catalan Association of Oceanographers and Oceanographers (ACOIO). Since its first edition in 2013, it gathers each summer young researchers and experts to exchange ideas on the advances in ecological research.
This year, the course focuses on the use of omics techniques, such as genomics, for the study of ecosystems. From a multidisciplinary perspective, the objective is to discuss how the revolution generated by the irruption of these techniques is contributing to increase our understanding of the composition and functioning of ecosystems and to generate new theoretical frameworks. The course is coordinated by Javier del Campo, Ramiro Logares, Cèlia Marrasé and Caterina Rodríguez, researchers at the ICM-CSIC.
During this week, 16 experts will share their knowledge and experience with 24 doctoral and postdoctoral students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, the United States, Norway, England, Morocco and Spain. The course aims to be a meeting point for early-career researchers and experts with long professional career to discuss the progress in ecology driven by the omics techniques.
Conferences and debates will focus on four main themes: functional and community ecology; ecology of ecosystems; evolutionary ecology and co-evolution; and theoretical and quantitative ecology.
"The irruption of genomics and bioinformatic methods in the study of ecosystems has generated a revolution in ecology and in all the scientific and technical disciplines derived," says Javier del Campo. "Ramón Margalef was a visionary who indicated, back in the 50s, that ecosystems can be understood as channels that project information into the future. Nowadays we can investigate this information thanks to the omics techniques "comments Ramiro Logares.
The sixth edition of the Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia, under the title "Ecology through the omics lens" is coordinated by and celebrated in the Institute of Marine Sciences, with the collaboration of the Catalan Association of Oceanographers and Oceanographers (ACOIO) and the support of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Agbar Foundation, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), the Campus of International Excellence of the Sea (CEIMAR), the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the Bioinformatics Association of Barcelona (BIB), the Societat Catalana de Biologia (SCB), the ISME Journal and the International Society of Protistologists (ISOP)
