The proposal was designed by the association La Ciència al Teu Món and the ICM, and aims to bring the general public closer to the marine microorganisms world using everyday reference elements.
The students of the training cycle of Hostelry in the labour insertion cooperative “Impulsem”, through the Ciència i Convivència 2021 program, had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the travelling exhibition FECYT SeaSensations a few days ago, a proposal hosted at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM), and the facilities and laboratories of the same research centre.
The research staff of the Litoral Biological Processes group, led by researcher Esther Garcés, the scientific director of the SeaSensations exhibition, showed the facilities to the students and introduced them to the incredible world of marine microorganisms through the interactive modules of the exhibition.
"The visit resulted to be very enriching both for the organisers, who tried to share our knowledge in the most didactic way possible, and for the visitors, who showed great interest in all the explanations and in our way to do science through their questions and commentaries", celebrate the Coastal Biological Processes group members.
SeaSensations, designed by the La Ciència al Teu Món (LCATM) association and the ICM, is an interactive, multisensory and immersive proposal that aims to bring to the general public the immensity, diversity and particularities of the universe of marine microorganisms through the manipulation and comparison of microorganism models using everyday elements as a reference.
The purpose of the exhibition is to invite society to explore new paradigms in marine microbiology, open a door to an invisible and virtually unknown universe, and to make available to all citizens research on these microorganisms that is carried out in the laboratories of the ICM, an internationally recognized centre for marine research.
The collaboration between the LCATM association and “Impulsem” has its origins in the Ciència i Convivència sessions. Impulsem has enjoyed scientific-social and participatory workshops for their students for several years. This close link between the two entities resulted in different groups of Impulsem students taking an active part in the creation of the modules and furniture for the SeaSensations exhibition.
The visit was organised by the Litoral Biological Processes group of the ICM and the scientific dissemination association LCATM, and is also part of the activities of the Ciència i Convivència program, which has the support of Barcelona City Council.
The SeaSensations exhibition has the funding of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the active participation of the Association of Visual Disability of Catalonia, the employment cooperative Impulsem, the Ametlla de Mar City Council, and the environmental education company Plàncton, Divulgació i Serveis Marins.
