The Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM) hosts today and tomorrow an International Dissemination Conference on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) in the Mediterranean and Black Seas with the objectives of presenting the latest research on EAF in the area and towards fostering integrated collaboration among stakeholders, scientists, fisheries managers to enhance the sustainability of fishery resources.

The Conference is the final act of the FP7 EU CREAM project “Improving research in support to scientific advice to fisheries management in the Mediterranean and Black Seas”, wich aims to establish an effective collaboration network among key role players in Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries research and management. The participants in the project include national research institutes from Mediterranean and Black Sea countries with a long history and active participation in fisheries research and assessment, who provide advice to national, regional and international fisheries management organisms.

The project seeks the active collaboration of regional and international fisheries management organisms as external participants in the project, in order to identify the gaps (in terms of data, knowledge, training, coordination) which hamper at present the full application of the Ecosystem Approach in the management of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries.

The Conference is organised by scientists from the ICM (Jordi Lleonart, Francesc Maynou, Laura Fontán i Paloma Martín), and from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza – CIHEAM, with the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The Conference Proceedings, including the text of the keynote lectures, theatre presentations will be published in an special issue of Scientia Marina, the journal of marine sciences published by the ICM-CSIC.
