PLOME: Plataforma de Larga Duración para la Observación de los Ecosistemas Marinos

PLOME proposes a spatially adaptive modular platform of independent and wirelessly connected benthic stations and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for monitoring and mapping marine ecosystems over long-lasting periods with near real-time supervision. PLOME project will provide an intelligent solution to the problem of spatio-temporal seafloor observations. The project will validate the different developments and the overall concept in three proof-of-concept consortium experiments: 1) in a coastal environment;  2) in a deep marine protected área as fishery-no take zone to restore the Nowray lobster stock (being co-managed with fisherman); and finally, 3) during one-week at the cabled observatory OBSEA as EMSO Test-Site (www.obsea.es).

Specific objectives are:

• O.1 To design a framework for deep-sea marine monitoring with a platform of fixed and mobile systems.
• O.2 To develop technological capabilities to enable the prolonged deployment of AUVs at deep-sea for marine observation
• O.3 To develop interconnected long-lasting stand-alone stations as a strategic multiparametric platform for continuous ecosystem monitoring.
• O.4 To develop an effective communication strategy combining heterogeneous technologies for the operation of the different deployed systems.
• O.5 To develop techniques for processing and analyzing different kinds of marine data gathered from mobile and fixed stations.
• O.6 To conduct demonstrations of the overall PLOME concept and new developments in real operational scenarios.
