ESR3 JOB DESCRIPTION AT THE INSTITUTO DE CIENCIAS DEL MAR- CSIC, BARCELONA (SPAIN)

Project Title: Top down control of marine protists by mixotrophs.

Objectives: ESR3 will explore predator-prey interactions where mixotrophs are the predators, with the final objective of quantifying in situ mixotrophic impact on other protists. In particular, the following topics will be addressed:

Develop a new technique to quantify predation by mixotrophs.
Evaluate, in the laboratory, differences in feeding rates amongst different mixotroph functional groups and the main factors affecting them.
Evaluate contribution of predation to growth.
Implement the new technique to estimate predatory activity of mixotrophs in the field.

ESR9 JOB DESCRIPTION AT THE INSTITUTO DE CIENCIAS DEL MAR- CSIC, BARCELONA (SPAIN)

Project Title: Interactions between mixotrophs and their predators.

Objectives: ESR9 will study the bottom up/top down interactions between mixotrophs and their predators, namely copepods. In particular, the following topics will be addressed:

Explore impacts of the nutritional status of mixotrophic prey on prey selection by copepods.
E9.O2 Explore impacts of nutritional status of mixotrophs on copepod physiology and growth.
E9.O3 Optimise and validate copepod consumer dynamics models against experimental data.
E9.O4 Disseminate new understanding of predator-prey interactions impacting on the trophic web leading to fisheries through scientific and public facing media.
