Marta Umbert

Investigador/a Postdoctoral

Dr. Marta Umbert is a physical oceanographer specializing in polar oceanography and the integration of remote sensing, reanalysis, and in-situ observations. After completing international predoctoral and postdoctoral stays in France and the United States, she secured a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, where she focused on reconstructing 3D ocean currents in the Arctic Ocean using satellite data. She has contributed to several ESA-funded projects dedicated to the development of sea surface salinity products from the SMOS mission. In 2024, she was awarded an ERC Starting Grant (FRESH-CARE) to advance the understanding of Arctic freshwater dynamics through innovative satellite-based and in-situ methodologies.

Dr. Umbert’s scientific track record includes over 20 peer-reviewed publications, more than 30 conference presentations, and extensive collaborations with European and US research groups. She has led national and international research projects, supervised Master’s students, and is currently mentoring three PhD candidates.

Her field experience includes participation in the SPURS campaign aboard the Sarmiento de Gamboa in the North Atlantic (2013), led by Dr. Jordi Font. She led the preparation and execution of the SSSICE-SO project, joining an Antarctic cruise aboard Le Commandant Charcot in the Weddell Sea. In 2025, she led the FANS project, participating in an expedition along the east and west coasts of Greenland. Her project FIELD FRESH-CARE has been selected to join a third expedition on Le Commandant Charcot in 2026, sampling across Fram Strait and East Greenland.
