We aim at providing high-quality knowledge and technical tools to raise the students’ skills and self-confidence in order to turn them into independent-thinking scientists. One particular characteristic of ICM is the special emphasis on the relevance of an interdisciplinary approach to marine sciences.
We focus on a personalized mentoring of the junior researchers through advising of their research work and the teaching of highly specialized courses.
The ICM Friday Seminars have been organised since 1990 to share the latest advances in marine and terrestrial sciences, provide opportunities to expand research activities within the institute, and encourage the exchange of ideas between different research groups.

The PhD in Marine Sciences is an interuniversity doctoral programme involving the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), as well as three research centres of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC): the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM), the Centre for Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB), and the Centre for Research and Development (CID). The programme received a positive evaluation from the Agency for the Quality of the University System of Catalonia (AQU) in July 2013 and from the Spanish Universities Council in September 2013.
The PhD in Marine Sciences combines advanced and flexible training with a strong research community of renowned scientists and technical staff, state-of-the-art infrastructure both in the laboratory and at sea, significant scientific output, and a highly relevant marine-related socioeconomic sector. It therefore provides an excellent framework for guiding and supervising students wishing to further their education by undertaking a doctoral thesis in this field.
ICM Cares is a programme designed to foster the talent of ICM staff throughout their entire journey with the institution. Its main objective is to support people as they join the Institute and help them develop their skills, preparing them to take on new challenges throughout their professional careers while contributing to ICM’s excellence.
The programme covers all stages of the professional lifecycle: recruitment, onboarding, development, engagement and motivation, and offboarding.

With the aim of empowering young undergraduate and postgraduate scientists, the ICM organises an annual summer course called the Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia. Held annually since 2013, with the exception of 2019, the course aims to provide an interdisciplinary perspective on marine ecology, fostering discussion and the exchange of ideas between early-career and experienced members of the scientific community. During the colloquia, researchers and students from different countries and disciplines have the opportunity to discuss current and future challenges in the field of ecology.
Between 2013 and 2018, the Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia were co-organised with the Catalan Association of Oceanographers (ACOIO). Since 2020, the event has been jointly organised with the Iberian Society of Ecology (SIBECOL) and the Mar de Ciència Association, one of the active associations at the ICM.
The Barcelona Ocean Courses offer specialised training in marine sciences for professionals, researchers, postgraduate students, and the general public. The courses take place at the ICM facilities and focus on three main areas: General Topics and Outreach, Fundamentals of Marine Sciences, and Specialised Technical Courses.
