We aim at providing high-quality knowledge and technical tools to raise the students’ skills and self-confidence in order to turn them into independent-thinking scientists. One particular characteristic of ICM is the special emphasis on the relevance of an interdisciplinary approach to marine sciences.
We focus on a personalized mentoring of the junior researchers through advising of their research work and the teaching of highly specialized courses.
The PhD in Marine Sciences is an Interuniversity Program in which the Universitat de Barcelona and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya participate, as well as 3 centers of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientríficas (CSIC), the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM), the Centre d'Estudis Avançats de Blanes (CEAB) and the Centre d'Investigació i Desenvolupament (CID). The program has been positively verified by the l’Agència per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya (AQU) (July 2013) and by the Consejo de Universidades (September 2013).
The doctoral degree in Marine Sciences combines advanced, flexible training elements with a critical mass of renowned researchers and technical experts, top-notch facilities (both in the laboratory and at sea), outstanding scientific activity, and highly significant socio-economic activity linked to the sea. Thanks to these assets, the programme provides the best framework to guide and direct students who wish to complete their academic training by preparing a doctoral thesis in this area.
ICM Cares is a program oriented to nurture the talent at the ICM from the very beginning to the very end of their relationship with our institution. The main goal is to help people join the Institute, and to develop their skills to prepare them to face new challenges in their professional life, in turn contributing to ICM’s excellence. The ICM Friday’s seminars have been conducted since 1990 to communicate the latest advances in marine and earth sciences, and bring the possibility to expand all research activities in the centre aswell as for the exchange of ideas within different working groups.

With the objective of training young graduate and postgraduate scientists, the ICM organizes an annual summer school, the Ramon Margalef Summer Colloquia. This colloquium, organized annually since 2013 (except for 2019), aims at an interdisciplinary perspective of marine ecology, fostering the discussion and exchange of ideas among the junior and senior lecturers. During the colloquia, teachers and students from different countries and disciplines have the opportunity to discuss about the present and future challenges in ecology.
Between 2013 and 2018 the Colloquium was co-organized with the Catalan Association of Oceanographers (ACOIO). From 2020, it will be co-organized with the Sociedad Ibérica de Ecología (SIBECOL, Iberian Society of Ecology) and the Associació Mar de Ciencia (AMC, Sea of Science Association), one of the bottom-up associations that has ICM as its headquarters.
Barcelona Ocean offers specialized training in marine sciences to professionals and researchers, graduate students and general public. Courses are held at ICM’s facilities and focus into three main training blocks: General Topics and Outreach, Fundamentals of Marine Sciences, and Specialized Technical Courses.
