Barcelona Ocean is an educational initiative granting highly specialized courses on all fields related to the Marine Sciences as well as generalist courses on many themes related to the formation of researchers and science dissemination. The Barcelona Ocean courses will be held at the Institute of Marine Sciences (Institut de Ciències del Mar, ICM).

The training offered by Barcelona Ocean spreads over eight topics: Dissemination courses, General Topics, Marine Technology, Marine Biochemical Cycles, Conservation of Natural Marine Resources, Structure and Dynamics of Marine Ecosystems, Physics of the Ocean and Climate, Marine Geosciences. These courses are grouped in time in two blocks: a spring block on Marine Ecosystems and Conservation and an autumn block on Ocean Physics and Geosciences, with each of these blocks including several key general courses on issues such as communication and dissemination, writing science, and computer programming.

Barcelona Ocean offers over 30 courses every year, with a typical duration of full-day courses during one week (30 hours) though there are some shorter courses (half a day during one week and 2-3 day). These courses are generally addressed to researchers, professionals and students, but anyone interested in the sea is encouraged to participate. Over 40 internationally recognized researchers from the ICM and professionals from other national and international institutions will participate at Barcelona Ocean. They all are willing to share their time and experience with the Barcelona Ocean students, hoping to have this interaction continued beyond the temporal extent of the courses.
